Over the past week we have been looking at various primary and secondary accounts of the attempted Mongol invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281. These accounts often differ in the importance that Kamikazes ("Divine Winds") played in defeating the invading Mongols. By looking at different textbooks, scrolls, letters, and images we can see how historical events are manipulated by the winners and losers of history to serve a narrative. Our last assignment for this unit will be for students to write an essay where they take a a position on the central question of 'Did typhoons save Japan from the Mongols?'
